Tawheed: realizing and affirming monotheism.
Sunnah: the way of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Ghayb: the unwitnessed.
Kufr: disbelief.
Raafidhah: a deviant sect which falsely claims love for the family of the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – while cursing, rejecting, and declaring disbelief upon most of the Companions, and opposing the creed of Ahl as-Sunnah.
Jibreel: Gabriel.
Jinn: invisible creatures created from fire. Like humans, they are commanded to worship Allah alone.
Shaytaan: devil/demon. The chief of them is Iblees (Satan), the one who refused to prostrate to Aadam – peace be upon him.
Ark: ship.
Nooh: Noah.
Ibraaheem: Abraham.
Moosa: Moses. Pronounced: Moo/s/aa.
ʿeesaa: Jesus.
Daawood: David.
Firʿawn: Pharaoh.
Sulaymaan: Solomon.
Zakariyyaa: Zachary.
Iblees: Satan.
al-Meezaan: the Scale.
as-Siraat: the Path.
Jahannam: Hell.
Jannah: Paradise.
Maariyah al-Qibtiyyah: Maria the Copt.
Bayt al-Maqdis: Jerusalem. (lit. “the Holy House”).
Hijra: Migration.
Thaat en-Nitaaqayn: She of the Two Waistbands.
Al-Khulafaaʾ ar-Raashidoon: The Rightly Guided Caliphs; the successors and leaders who came after the Prophet – Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
Es-Siddeeq: The Unwavering Believer.
Soorat/soorah: chapter.
Suwar: chapters.
Muʿawwithatayn: the two refuge-seeking chapters.
Istijmaar: dry purification after relieving oneself, using stones (or similar) instead of water.
Wudhooʾ: ablution.
Janaabah: major ritual impurity.
Ghusl: major ablution, which is washing the whole body, head to toe.
Tayammum: dry ablution, which is performed using clean earth (dust, stones…).
Athaan: call to prayer.
Muʾathin: caller to prayer.
Israaʾ: Night Journey.
Sutrah: cover/barrier (in front of one praying).
Takbeer: to say: Allaahu Akbar – Allah is the Greatest.
Duʿaaʾ al-Istiftaah: the opening supplication.
Al-Istiʿaatha: The refuge-seeking.
Rukooʿ: bowing.
Sujood: Prostration (general term for the act of bowing and touching the ground in prayer).
Sajdah: One prostration.
Sajdaat: Plural of sajdah; multiple prostrations.
As-salaat al-ibraaheemiyyah: The Abrahamic prayer/supplication.
Hajj: pilgrimage.
Khamr: wine and similar intoxicants.
Izaar: lower garment.
Thawb: long robe.
Al-khathf: pelting small stones.
Al-Bayt al-˓ateeq: the Ancient House.
